| This lesson will be about effect timing, effect negation and effect priority.
So first of is effect timing. This is basically when an effect can activate, such as is an effect states "when this card is destroyed and sent to the graveyard, you can..." This is when the effect can activate after it is in the graveyard from destruction, but can't activate if the card is banished or sent back the hand/deck instead of going to grave. Another example of an effect timing is when you would activate a counter trap such as solemn warning. Also if you missed the timing of an effect you cant activate that effect and if you try that will be considered cheating(unless the other player allows it, but in most causes wont).
Second is effect negation, which basically is: your effect cant take place, it can be activated and you pay the effect cost, but the effect will resolve as if the card had no effect in the first place. Also cards, such as solemn strike, that negate an effect activation only negate that effect activation and if it goes through, you can activate the same effect, even if it state you can only activate the effect once per turn since the effect activation was negated. Also, cards that negate effects on the field, such as skill drain and breakthrough skill, can only negate effects on the field and not anywhere else. So if a card gets destroyed and sent to the graveyard and has an effect that activates when sent to the graveyard, that effect can still activate even if it was under the effect of skill drain or breakthrough skill.
And finally effect priority. So effect priority is when an effect can activate first. This can only apply if both players cards are destroyed at the same time and have effects that can activate when destroyed and when this happens the players turn determines which ones activate first(Ex: if I was playing yang zing and had a face-down yang zing bixi and my opponent had a face-up guiding ariande of their side of the field. Its my turn and I activate dark hole and both my bixi and my opponent's ariande are destroyed, since it is my turn my bixi's effect gains priority and activates first, then my opponents ariande's eff activates and creates a chain.
And that covers the basics, so good luck dueling and have fun. | |
